The Power of When (Just Finished it – Great Book!)

The Power of When

I love reading…both fiction and non-fiction.

When I’m reading non-fiction though, I want to get something out of the book.

I just finished reading “The Power of When” this afternoon, and definitely got a lot out of that book.

I HOPE to implement it…but what Michael Breus is asking is a lot.

Basically, everyone has a chronotype. There are 4 different types, the Dolphin, Wolf, Bear, and Lion. Based on which type you are (there is a very quick quiz in the beginning of the book), you should do things at certain times of the day.

I’m a bear, which it seems about 50% of the population is.

That means that the hours I should be sleeping, working, eating, and more is different than those of the Dolphin, Wolf, and Lion.

He really goes over anything you can think of. The best times to:

  • Wake up in the morning, take a nap, go to bed at night,
  • Eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, go out on a date,
  • Make decisions, have sex, argue, weigh yourself,
  • Get a flu shot, take a shower, drink coffee,
  • Ask for a raise, brainstorm, get rich, and more.

Everything he said made sense…it’s just a matter of how much can you really change the times that you do things.

He is realistic. He knows that there are some things you can’t change. For example, your boss usually tells you what your hours are, so you can’t choose that. But you can still sometimes decide when to do different parts of your job. And even if you can’t decide that, there are many other things that are under your control.

I’d love to try some of his suggestions, and see if they help. According to what I read, one of the reasons that I might be so exhausted in the mornings might not be because I’m not getting enough sleep, but because I’m sleeping the wrong hours.

The author also suggests that by eating at the right times for your chronotype, that you will not only not gain weight, but you might lose weight as well!

Whether he’s right or not, I don’t know yet…but it’s definitely worth trying out!
