Which Waffle Maker to Buy? One with Teflon or DuraCeramic?
A few weeks ago, our waffle maker broke. I thought buying a new one would take just minutes of time, but it turns out I’m wrong.
We usually have waffles once every few weeks. It’s a nice and quick meal, and it tastes great – especially when I put chocolate chips in the batter.
Unfortunately, my latest waffle maker only lasted about 2 years, and the last time I made them it just stopped working.
So last night I finally remembered to go to Amazon and look up waffle makers. There were 2 that were in the running. They each had over 2,000 reviews and looked great.
I then started reading the reviews, and one person showed that theirs came with a warning for California residents (California Proposition 65), saying that “This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.”
I quickly realized that they meant it had Teflon, and figured no problem, I’ll start looking up waffle makers that don’t use Teflon. So after searching those, I found a few that were PTFE free (no Teflon.)
The reviews weren’t as good as the ones with Teflon, but I figured that was a small price to pay.
But then I came across a review where someone was asking what chemicals were in DuraCeramic. In fact, they had written the company asking them, and the company refused to answer, only saying what wasn’t in it.
They said they suspect that Aluminum might be in it, and that would be really bad…but since the company won’t say anything, they can’t know for sure.
So that leaves me utterly confused.
Do I go with a waffle iron that has Teflon in it, which California says is really bad? Or do I go with DuraCeramic which who knows what is inside?
Part of me says that either would be fine. I mean if Teflon was that bad, would companies be allowed to sell it? But then I could say the same thing about the DuraCeramic.
I really thought it would be simple and fun to buy a new waffle maker…but now I’m not sure which to go with!
Does anyone have any suggestions on which to go with?
Here are the 2 specific waffle makers I’ve been choosing between: The Presto 03510 FlipSide Belgian Waffle Maker and the Oster CKSTWFBF22-ECO DuraCeramic Flip Waffle Maker. I think they’re both good, although based on the reviews I’d probably go with A if they were made out of the same thing.
It’s definitely not easy these days trying to buy things when you’re concerned about what they’re made of though!
