How I Start Each Morning – With Lemon Water

Lemon Water

Every morning, one of the first things I do is drink a glass of lemon water, and wait about a half of an hour before eating or drinking anything else.

I take a half of a lemon, squeeze it into my glass full of water, and enjoy.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s a bit of an acquired taste…and even then it’s not the best tasting drink I’ve ever had.

So why do I do it?

Because of all of the benefits.

Health Benefits of Drinking Warm Lemon Water

  • Lemons have a lot of great vitamins in them, and an entire lemon is only around 12 calories. You’ll get Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Calcium, Folate, Iron, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus. In other words, it helps protect your immune system, helps you with your heart, brain, and nerve functions, and more.
  •

  • Most people don’t drink enough water during the day, so drinking a glass of lemon water first thing helps you stay hydrated. When you’re dehydrated you aren’t as focused, can be sleepy or irritable, have dry skin, headaches, can get dizzy, and other negative effects. Making sure you drink enough water will give you more energy, help reduce allergies, flush out unwanted bacteria, and even slow down the aging process.
  •

  • Warm lemon water helps flush your digestive system, and will improve your digestion as well as make you feel better.
  •

  • Warm water helps maintain a healthy metabolism, so this is a great way to start your day. Since the warm water increases body temperature, it’ll increase your metabolic rate, meaning you’ll burn more calories.
  •

  • If you’re sick or are starting to get sick, warm lemon water is a great natural remedy. It’ll help clear your nasal congestion as well as relieve a sore throat.
  •

  • Warm lemon water can help relieve pain, since the heat from the water can have a calming effect on your muscles.
  •

  • Even just the scent of the lemon water helps you start your day. As you smell the lemon while you’re drinking it, you’ll be less stressed, and if feeling better isn’t enough, you may also notice enhanced cognitive performance.

I drink it cold because I love drinking cold water, and usually exercise first thing in the morning and so want something cold.

But after learning about how great warm lemon water is for you, I’m going to try it and see if I like it better. I suggest you do the same.

Note: You should either brush your teeth before drinking lemon water, or wait at least a half hour after you finish drinking before brushing, as not to hurt the enamel on your teeth. Using a straw should help as well.
