Make Tomorrow Easier Than Today

Preparing a water bottle, food, keys, and other essentials now to make life easier for your future self.I do things for Future Me all the time.

Sometimes Future Me is tomorrow morning. Sometimes she’s a few hours from now. Occasionally she’s five minutes from now.

And I’ve discovered that she is extremely appreciative!

It can be something ridiculously small. Filling my water bottle before I need it. Putting something by the door so I won’t forget it. Plugging in a device when I notice the battery is getting low instead of waiting until I actually need it.

None of these things are impressive.

But then Future Me shows up, discovers that something she needs is already done, and thinks, Oh, thank you.

And I think we could all use a few more moments like that.

You Don’t Have to Get Ahead on Everything

When we think about making tomorrow easier, it’s easy to turn it into another giant project.

Meal prep for the entire week. Clean the whole house. Get your inbox to zero. Plan every hour of tomorrow. Lay out everything you’ll need. Finish every unfinished task.

Suddenly, making tomorrow easier has made today exhausting. And who has time for that anyway?

That’s not what I’m talking about.

I’m talking about doing one small thing now because you know it’s going to make life slightly easier later.

You aren’t trying to get ahead of your entire life.

You’re just giving Future You a little help.

The goal isn’t to do more today. It’s to make something you’re already going to deal with a little easier later.

Look for Things You Already Know Will Happen

You don’t have to predict the future to help Future You.

A lot of tomorrow is surprisingly predictable.

You’re probably going to brush your teeth. Eat something. Get dressed. Need your keys. Charge something. Drink something. Work. Make dinner. Go somewhere. Take medication or vitamins. Pack something for someone. Feed a pet.

Your days probably contain dozens of things you know you’re going to do again (and again and again).

And that gives Present You an advantage.

You can ask:

Is there anything I could do now that would make one of those things easier later?

If you know you’ll need something tomorrow morning, put it where you’ll see it tonight.

If you’re already downstairs and know you’ll want something upstairs later, bring it with you.

If you notice you’re almost out of something you use every morning, replace it now instead of discovering it when you’re rushing tomorrow.

If you know tomorrow is going to be especially busy, decide tonight what can be made simpler.

These aren’t major life changes. Even picking out your clothes tonight will make tomorrow morning that much easier.

They’re tiny gifts to the person you’re about to become.

Finish the Tiny Task While You’re Already There

There are so many things in life that take almost no time when you’re already in the right place, and feel incredibly annoying when you have to make a separate trip to do them later.

You’re standing next to the trash can and notice it’s almost full. You’re walking upstairs and see something on the steps that belongs up there. You’re in the kitchen and notice the water pitcher is almost empty. You’re leaving the car and see something you need to bring inside. You’re at your desk and notice your headphones need to be charged.

Sometimes the easiest way to make Future You’s life better is simply to finish the tiny task while Present You is already there.

Not because you need to be productive every second.

But because thirty seconds now might save you five annoying minutes later.

Remove One Decision

Future You doesn’t only benefit when you do a task ahead of time.

You can also make life easier by making a decision ahead of time.

When are you going to exercise? What’s the first thing you’re going to work on? What are you going to wear? What are you having for dinner tomorrow? (This one is a big one for me. I can’t tell you how much better my evening goes when I already know what I’m making!) What do you need to bring with you?

A decision that takes two minutes when you’re calm can feel much harder when you’re tired, hungry, rushed, or trying to get out the door.

You don’t need to plan everything.

Just look for one decision Future You would be happy not to make.

Set Things Up Where You’ll Need Them

This is one of my favorite ways to make life easier because it doesn’t depend on remembering.

Instead of telling Future You, Don’t forget this, set up the environment so Future You doesn’t have to remember.

Put the item by the door. Leave the document open on your computer. Put the ingredients you’ll need together. Move the thing you keep forgetting somewhere impossible to miss. Set out what you’ll need for the morning.

This is less about becoming more organized and more about making the next action obvious.

Present You already knows what needs to happen.

So give Future You a head start.

Think Beyond Tomorrow

Future You doesn’t have to mean tomorrow.

Sometimes Future You is tonight.

If you’re walking through the kitchen at 3:00 p.m. and know you’ll be exhausted at 11:00 p.m., is there anything you could do now that would make tonight easier? (Yes, Jessica. Do the dishes at 3:00 p.m. Future You will be SO much happier!)

Sometimes Future You is next week.

If you notice you’re running low on something, add it to the shopping list now.

I do this all of the time because I hate running out of things. Once I’m getting low, I’ll start looking for a sale so I can replace it before I run out and hopefully save money at the same time. Bonus points if it’s something I can stock up on while it’s on sale!

Sometimes Future You is months from now.

Save the receipt. Label the box. Put the appointment on the calendar. Write down the thing you’re absolutely positive you’ll remember.

(I am always absolutely positive I’ll remember. Future Me would like to report that sometimes I do not.)

The farther away Future You is, the less you can predict exactly what she’ll need.

But you can still leave her clues, shortcuts, and fewer messes to untangle.

Don’t Make Present You Miserable for Future You

There’s an important limit to all of this.

Present You matters too.

You don’t need to spend your entire evening preparing everything for tomorrow. You don’t need to sacrifice today’s rest so tomorrow can be perfect. And you definitely don’t need another list of 27 things you’re supposed to do before bed.

The goal isn’t to move all of tomorrow’s work into today.

It’s to notice the occasional moment when a tiny effort now creates disproportionate relief later.

Thirty seconds now saves ten minutes tomorrow. One decision now eliminates a stressful decision later. Putting something in the right place now prevents a frantic search in the morning.

That’s the sweet spot.

Leave Future You One Little Gift

You don’t need to overhaul anything after reading this.

Just think about tomorrow. Not the whole day. One moment.

What will you need? What will you probably forget? What tends to annoy you? Where do you usually get rushed?

Then ask:

What could Future You thank Present You for?

Do that one thing.

Fill the bottle. Put it by the door. Plug it in. Write it down. Make the decision. Move the thing. Prepare the one piece that usually slows you down.

Then tomorrow, pay attention when you reach that moment.

Because there’s something surprisingly nice about realizing that someone already took care of you.

Even when that someone was you.
